The opening salvo of the second of Nick Lapien's brace of Mistress EP's couldn't be more different from the first. Sultry deep house strewn with soulful female vocal samples has been jettisoned in favour of the steely precision of techno, albeit from the Detroit rather than the Gesloten Cirkel end of the spectrum. By fifth track "Need Nobody", however, the vibes have veered back towards house accentuated by a soaring vocal sample of the title. Closing cut "It Ain't The Same" pulls a similar trick, a bouncy piano motif almost bringing things full circle. Two essential EPs by an truly gifted producer. Don't buy one without the other.
